fool’s gold

before, I had fool’s gold —
perhaps, just a fire to stoke
the burning embers
spitting sparks in my soul,
but nothing more to show.

now, I have a heart full of gold
that cannot be seen,
and treasures with value
that cannot be spent,
and a smile on my face
and wings on my back.

and, now, I realize
that running this marathon
may have spent my lungs
and weakened my legs.

but, now, I stand
at the peak of this mountain —
at this base of this throne —
with a crown on my head.
